The mangrove tour, stop by stop

The trip starts at Tanjung Rhu Jetty, a plain local jetty with a calm view of boats, river and limestone hills. From there the boat winds into the mangroves and the world changes: engine noise, wind, and walls of mangrove trees on both sides. The wildlife stops come quickly. At the eagle feeding spot, the brahminy kites, the bird Langkawi is named after, swoop to the water surface, and there is a real sense of awe watching them up close. Then a monkey feeding stop where long-tailed macaques, used to being fed, come right up to the boat. It is fun, especially for kids, but it needs care: the monkeys get excited and will grab.

Next is the crocodile cave, named not for real crocodiles but for a rock shaped like a crocodile's head, with two holes like nostrils. The boat slides slowly through narrow, calm water with limestone on either side.
